The International Centre for Leadership Development Nigeria will on 11th February, this year, hold a Cyber Crime Prevention Awareness Campaign tagged “Safer Internet Day 2020”.

The event which is themed “Together For A Better Internet” will hold simultaneously in eight Nigerian States including Lagos, Edo, Rivers, Benue, Imo, Kano, Cross River and Abuja FCT.

For the purpose of the upcoming event, ICLDN will be partnering with: UNODC Education4Justice-E4J, Child Online Safety, AYICRIP, CAP and CLIQEDGE.

Below is a Press Statement by ICLDN Founder/ Executive Director, Mr Felix Iziomoh, made available to FirstNigeriaTV Correspondent:

“The internet has brought and will continue to bring huge benefits to its positive use by Nigerians and we will encourage the growth of access to it.

More so, there are so many threats to the public and businesses from cyber criminals and it is the responsibility of Government in alliance with all other stakeholders in cyber technology to tackle the menace.

Cyber crime is no longer about those who seek to access computer systems for fun or to prove it can be done. The persons behind such crimes are organized, and seek to take advantage of those using internet services.

We can no longer afford to be pleased with this! The threat from cyber crime is constantly sprouting with new opportunities of committing old crimes in new ways as well as high technology crimes evolving.

Now is the time to improve public awareness on cyber crime through working with other corporate bodies and government agencies to keep Nigeria safe in the cyber world -what it looks like, who is doing it and what the public and businesses can do to protect themselves from cyber criminals.

Cyber crime threatens our safety, undermines our economy and its extent and sophistication in the 21st century demand an equally refined and ambitious strategy for tackling the menace.

This project aims to transform the mindset of young individuals in order to build a strong platform to reduce cybercrime by preventing the young ones from getting involved in its practice and also raising awareness for others to take necessary steps to avoid being victims.

The initiative is determined to provide support to educate people on cybercrime, create awareness campaigns and also for the positive usage of existing cyber criminals who have been convicted.

This campaign undertaken by ICLDNG is mainly focused on serving the purposes of the entire education sector which constitutes students aged between 10 – 18 years, teachers, guardians and the school management and also developing a strong infrastructure for identifying cybercrime.

We are planning on preventing cyber crime with a campaign which creates a platform for everyone working on a crime free cyber world while targeting 1500 youngsters in eight states of the federation.

Activities lined up for the event include:

•             Conference on Internet Safety

•             Video on Cybercrime and Anti-corruption

•             Cybercrime preventive education awareness

•             Social Media Safety Tips and protecting oneself online

•             Quiz competition on online security/safety

•             Roles of Parents, Teachers and Policy Makers in enforcing internet safety

•             Sharing of information and materials on online safety provided by UNODC.

Young people want to create their own future and be productive and as such we can ensure they have the right to online safety and stay out of internet crime. As productive and engaged citizens, this younger generation can be the driver of economic prosperity in Nigeria
