BREAKING: Senate Passes Electoral Act Amendment Bill, Okays Electronic Transmission Of Results
The Senate has passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill and okayed the electronic transmission of election results.
The approval was given on Tuesday when the lawmakers resumed plenary after a three-week recess.
A committee had been selected by the Upper chamber to meet with members of the House of Representatives Conference Committee and agree the differences in the Senate and House versions of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
A successful agreement would mean the National Assembly has completed the process of amending the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
BREAKING: Unknown Gunmen Kill Retired Airforce Officer in Kaduna
A retired military officer, Air Vice Marshal Muhammed Maisaka, who is also the Chief Medical Director of MSK hospital in Rigasa, was murdered in the early hours of Tuesday, in his residence alongside his grandson.
According to Saleh Bala, an eyewitness and in-law to the deceased, the bandits first went to the boys’ quarters where they picked his physiotherapist (also a NAF personnel) and they forced him to lead them into the main house.
He added that the attackers left the house without stealing anything or threatening anyone further.
The police spokesman appealed to Kaduna residents to assist security agencies with useful and timely information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of the dastardly act.
EFCC uncovers $2m Properties in Abuja, 50cars, Six other possessions from Maina
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday secured the conviction of Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT).
A Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Maina to eight years imprisonment following a N2.1billion pension scam.
Earlier in 2019, Maina was arraigned by the EFCC, but he pleaded not guilty to a 12-count charge of money laundering. However, Justice Okon Abang found the accused guilty.
Anambra Decides: INEC begins supplementary election in Ihiala LGA
The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that the scheduled supplementary governorship elections for Ihiala local government will commence today.
In a statement made by the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, he said the Commission made a slight change to the commencement and ending time for the election in line with extant rules and regulations.
According to Okoye, the move followed the suspension of collation of results in respect of governorship election as announced yesterday by the State Collation/Returning Officer and the decision of the Commission to hold an election in Ihiala Local Government Area on Tuesday.
The Commission urges the citizens to conduct themselves in an orderly manner to ensure that the election is brought to a peaceful conclusion.
FG debunks claims of Third Mainland Bridge “opening up”
The Federal Government has debunked claims making the rounds that the Third Mainland Bridge is ‘opening up’, ‘shaking’ and as such not safe to use.
Motorists in Lagos had earlier on Monday been put on alert via social media messages on the need to avoid the busy bridge over an alleged structural defect that could cause a near or total collapse if not urgently attended.
However, in a swift response on Monday night, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Engineer Olukayode Popoola debunked the saying he recently used the bridge and there was nothing to show that it was opening up or shaking as alleged on social media.
Popoola urged commuters to ignore the alarm saying the bridge is safe for use.
Police place N5m bounty on fleeing kidnapping suspects in Ekiti
The Ekiti State Police Command has placed N5 million as reward for genuine information on the whereabouts of four suspects over alleged kidnapping in the state.
ASP Sunday Abutu, the command’s spokesperson in a statement on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti, gave the names of the fleeing suspects as Banji Akeem, Samuel Ebira, Dele Jimoh and Dayo Igwe.
Abutu said the four now at large were mentioned as gang members by other arrested suspects currently in police custody.
According to him, the suspects were involved in the abduction of prominent Ekiti citizens in the last two years.
Buhari seeks Senate’s confirmation of Prof. Omotayo as DG NIPSS
The Senate has received a formal request from President Muhammadu Buhari to confirm Prof. Ayo Omotayo as Director-General, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau.
The request is contained in a letter read on Tuesday during plenary by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, moments after the chamber resumed plenary from its 18-day recess.
Buhari, in the letter sought the confirmation of Omotayo as Director-General NIPSS in accordance with Section 5(2) of the NIPSS Act, 2004.
NYSC to build more orientation camps —DG
Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, Director-General, National Youth Service Corps, has confirmed that the scheme’s proposed Trust Fund would be used to build new orientation camps and expand existing ones.
He said this while addressing corps members during his visit to the Kubwa Orientation Camp, Abuja, on Monday.
In a statement signed by Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, the NYSC Director, Press, and Public Relations, Ibrahim said that the trust fund would also enable the scheme to maintain camp facilities nationwide.
He also urged the corps members to cherish their integrity during the service year, identify their skills, work hard, avoid cutting corners, and pursue their vision with passion, while using the NYSC platform to excel.
Ozigbo: I can still win Anambra Poll
Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party PDP in the Anambra governorship election, Valentine Ozigbo says he can still emerge as the winner as there are over 240,000 votes at stake in the Ihiala local government.
Addressing a press conference in Akwa, Ozigbo said that PDP can close the gap if electoral officials and materials are effectively deployed on time for the Ihiala supplementary election and voting in some polling units.
He currently has 51,322 votes while Chukwuma Soludo, candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance has 103,946 votes.
