The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the introduction of an alphanumeric digital postcode system that will assign a unique digital postcode to every house and property across Nigeria.
The new system, which is expected to go live on October 1, 2026, will make it easier to locate homes and other addresses, from Lagos to Sokoto and across the country.
The digital postcode system is expected to improve address verification and make it easier for banks and other institutions to verify customers’ residential addresses. It could also support faster emergency response by helping ambulance services and other emergency responders locate people and properties more accurately.
The initiative is expected to modernise Nigeria’s addressing system and provide a more reliable way of identifying locations for government agencies, businesses, financial institutions, emergency services, and individuals.
With the system in place, Nigerians may no longer have to rely solely on lengthy descriptions or landmarks when giving directions to their homes, as each property will have a unique digital identifier.
