Students of the University of Ibadan have shared their experiences regarding the institution’s past leadership and expressed their expectations of the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor.
A number of students anonymously fielded questions by FirstNigeriaTV’s Victoria Adekunle.
The exercise was designed to provide students with an opportunity to reflect on the university’s leadership and sincerely express their hopes for the new administration.
The students, who requested anonymity for personal reasons, spoke candidly about areas they believed required improvements, while acknowledging the university’s longstanding reputation for academic excellence.
A 300-level student from the Department of Counselling and Human Development Studies, Faculty of Education, urged the new Vice-Chancellor to preserve the institution’s tradition of producing graduates who are worthy both in character and learning.
The student also called for greater support for innovation-driven learning within and outside the classroom, emphasizing the need for policies that encouraged creativity and practical learning.
In addition, the student appealed to the university management to prioritize students’ welfare by listening to their concerns and ensuring the timely release of examination results.
“The idea of releasing first-semester results after the Book of Life has been published is not appropriate,” the student said, urging the university to release results before, or at the latest, by the second week of the second semester.
The student further appealed to the new Vice-Chancellor to approve the use of cooking gas in students’ halls of residence and maintain open communication with students, noting that they were vital stakeholders in preserving the university’s legacy.
Another respondent, a 300-level student from the Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, congratulated the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor and expressed confidence in the institution’s future.
“I congratulate the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the First and the Best. I am optimistic that your tenure will bring greater growth, fairness, and many more achievements to the glory of God and for the benefit of the University of Ibadan,” he said.
The responses reflected an overall students’ desire for a responsive and transparent administration committed to strengthening the University of Ibadan tradition of excellence.
