Co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr Bill Gates, called on the Federal Government to invest more in Nigeria’s primary healthcare, agriculture, and digital financial systems.

Speaking at the Pan-African Youth Innovation Forum in Lagos, Mr Gates highlighted the country’s potential for innovation and urged the government to provide equitable solutions to its talented young innovators. While he recognized Nigeria’s talented young population, he emphasized the importance of providing them with the basic building blocks of life, making precise financial allocations, and prioritizing equity as it is hard, according to him, to fulfill porentials without the basics that are necessary for life.

At the forum, tagged “Advancing Africa: Unleashing the Power of Youth in Science and Innovation,” Gates disclosed that both state and federal government of Nigeria only spend $10 per person on healthcare annually compared to the $31 spent by Sub-Saharan, thus suggesting that precise financial allocation be made, especially in the primary health sector to make clinics equipped and staffed, and ensure children have access to necessary vaccines.

” Yesterday, I met some impressive Nigerians whom the Gates Foundation has been partnering with for years. These scientists are improving seeds, fertiliser, and biopesticides so farmers can thrive in the face of climate change and grow crops free of toxins.

“And I met with a researcher scaling up an effective way to reduce anemia in pregnant women” Gates shared while commenting on the quality of innovative Minds that are in Nigeria.

Furthermore, Mr Gates expressed concern about the country’s economic instability and security threats and expressed faith in Nigeria’s young population’s ability to develop and improve lives, starting with education. Drawing from his experience as a teenager programming computers in high school, he remarked that young people have what it takes to make a difference in the world. He added that Nigerians continue to face challenges that he highlighted five years ago but believed that Nigeria’s young population would persevere and make life better within and beyond.

As an investor in healthcare and Innovation, Gates shared that there are several Innovations in the global pipeline that will improve the conditions of living greatly in Nigeria, according to him “They’re going to prevent infectious diseases, provide life-saving interventions for mothers and babies; make food more nutritious, and give women more convenient contraception options.

He further expressed excitement in the great potentials of Artificial Intelligence in saving and improving lives, affirming that “Down the road, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be applied in ways that will bring quality health care and education to more people”

The Gates Foundation, according to him are working on maximising Artificial Intelligence to its full potentials in a recent call for proposals tagged the “Grand Challenge”, in his words, “Our foundation is thinking about what we can do to help AI develop in ways that improve the lives and well-being of everyone, not just the wealthiest people in a few rich countries.

“The foundation has issued a call for proposals or what we call a “Grand Challenge” for innovative, safe uses of large language models. We received 1,300 proposals, and half of them were from Africa. The winners will be announced in Senegal in October. We hope what emerges will help build an evidence base for advancing equitable outcomes in health and development everywhere in the world,” he said.
