Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has vowed to make Nigeria a crime-free nation, following his decoration by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the State House, Abuja.
Egbetokun, while speaking with newsmen right after the decoration ceremony by Vice President, Kashim Shettima, confirmed his readiness to carry out his duties as the top police chief in the country. He described himself as a tiger who is prepared to pursue all criminals out of Nigeria.
“Now I have just been decorated and I’m looking forward to taking over tomorrow morning by 11 am.” He said, expressing that he feels confident and like a tiger, inside him that is ready to chase away every criminal in the nation. “And some other times, I feel like a lion in me, ready to devour all the internal enemies of Nigeria. That’s my feeling right now,” he added
Expressing his faith in his successor, former Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba, at the briefing expressed his confidence that Egbetokun would take over from where he stopped. Baba stated that he is happy because he is handing over to somebody he knows will carry the mantle of leadership of the police and take it to the next level.
“ We grew up in the job, we grew up together. I was his boss at a time, not even when I was IG, he worked under me twice, we’ve been working together and I know how he can go ahead to champion the cause of the police from where I have stopped”, Baba said.
Meanwhile, the Vice President of Nigeria, Shettima had earlier decorated Egbetokun, in an event well attended by senior government officials in the country, including Nigerian’s Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume; The Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Senator Hope Uzodinma, who is also the governor of Imo State; the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila and the National Security Adviser (NSA) to the President, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
The Acting Inspector-General of Police is beginning his assignment at a time when Nigeria is recording diverse cases of insecurity, ranging from kidnappings to terrorism and other criminal activities. In spite of this, Egbetokun insists his plan is to make Nigeria completely crime-free.
