President Buhari To Meet With 109 Senators Tonight

The scheduled meeting between members of the upper chamber and President Buhari was conveyed in a letter received from the State House and read during plenary by President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan.

“I write to inform the Distinguished President of the Senate, that President Muhammadu Buhari will host a dinner of Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Tuesday, 13th July 2021, at 8 pm 20:00 hrs,” the letter read, adding that “The venue is at the State House Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja.”

Although the details of the meeting is still sketchy, it is coming at a time when the lawmakers rejected the nomination of Lauretta Onochie as an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) National Commissioner.

BREAKING: Reps Call For Executive Order On Civil Relations Programme For Security Agencies

The House of Representatives on Tuesday enjoined the President to through an Executive Order, initiate a Civilianisation program in all the nation’s security agencies.

The lawmakers said the initiative will compel the agencies to use civilian staff to perform most back-office and non-tactical duties.

This is contained in the report of the special summit on national security headed by the Speaker, Femi Gabajbiamila.

Senate confirms five INEC Commissioners

The Senate has confirmed five nominees for appointment as National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The five nominees confirmed are Prof. Muhammad Sani Kallah, (Katsina), Prof. Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti), Saidu Ahmad (Jigawa), Dr Baba Bila (North-East) and Prof. Abdullahi Zuru (North-West).

Their confirmation followed the adoption of the report of the Committee on the screening of the INEC nominees at plenary on Tuesday.

Sanwo-Olu Arrests Traffic Robbers in Ojota

The convoy of the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday arrested a group of suspected robbers, whose stock-in-trade is tormenting motorists and pedestrians.

The gang of suspected criminals met their waterloo while attempting to engage in a raid around Ojota in-bound Alausa.

Their attempt was foiled by the security personnel attached to the Governor who swooped in and arrested three suspected members.

FCMB appoints new MD/CEO as Adam Nuhu retires

The Board of Directors of FCMB Group Plc have announced the appointment of Yemisi Edun as the Managing Director of First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Limited.

Prior to this appointment, the new Managing Director, Yemisi Edun was the Executive Director/ Chief Financial Officer of the bank and previously served as the acting Managing Director.

BREAKING: Senate considers amending JAMB Act to limit age of writing UTME

The Senate Committee on Basic Education has said it will pursue the amendment of the law establishing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, to enable it limit the age of candidates writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, to 16 years and above.

Vice Chairman of the committee, Senator Akon Eyakenyi gave the indication during the committee’s oversight visit to JAMB.

Chairman of the Committee, Kabiru Gaya, in his report on Tuesday, said Onochie did not satisfy the provisions of the Federal Character Principles.

Cracks In NGF Over Southern Govs’ 2023 Presidency Position

The Stand of the Southern governors that the 2023 pres­idency should be zoned to the Southern part of the country appears to have divided the Ni­geria Governors’ Forum (NGF), as state governors are not on the same page on the issue.

According to the communiqué by the Southern governors read by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, “The Forum reiterates its commitment to the politics of equity, fairness and unanimous­ly agrees that the presidency of Nigeria be rotated between South­ern and Northern Nigeria and re­solved that the next president of Nigeria should emerge from the southern region.”

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, the chairman of the NGF, was also present at the Southern Governors’ Forum where the decision was made.

In an apparent response to his Southern counter­parts, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State at the weekend said the 1999 con­stitution does not recognise the zoning of presidency.

Sponsored by the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Nigerian Guild of Editors and Newspaper Publishers Association of Nigerian, the advertorial, which featured a man behind a cage, said the Nigerian government is sponsoring amendments for two acts – Nigerian Press Council (NPC) and National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) acts.

The publication on Monday marked a turning in the media’s fight against the amendment bills. Many journalists and groups have condemned the proposed amendments, describing them as an attempt by the Buhari government to stifle the freedom of speech and a way of muzzling the media into silence.

Coffee consumption linked to lower risk of COVID-19 infection

Regular coffee consumption of at least one cup daily was associated with a lower risk of COVID-19 infection, according to a study.

Researchers with Northwestern University published findings in the Nutrients journal, stemming from an analysis of nearly 40,000 participants in the U.K. Biobank. The team studied participants’ dietary habits in 2006-2010 and hypothesized the subsequent risk of coronavirus infection in 2020. Researchers specifically looked at participants’ consumption of coffee, tea, processed meat, red meat, fruit, vegetables and oily fish.

Although these findings warrant independent confirmation, adherence to certain dietary behaviors may be an additional tool to existing COVID-19 protection guidelines to limit the spread of this virus,” FOX NEWS

Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, has welcomed the formation of a legal team by Ohanaeze Ndigbo to monitor the proceedings of the self-acclaimed IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

A move which is in line with the doctrine of the right to fair hearing in section 36 of the constitution of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria.

Emir Of Kajuru Regains Freedom After One Night In Kidnappers’ Den

Kidnapped Emir of Kajuru, Alhassan Adamu has been released after spending one night in the custody of the bandits.

The bandits had kidnapped the Emir in the early hours of sunday 11th of July 2021 six days after the prior abduction of 121 students of Bethel Baptist School in the neighboring Local Government Area.

A top official of the Kajuru council area as well as the spokesman of the Kajuru Emirate council, Dahiru Abubakar confirmed that the Emir was released at an undisclosed location within Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna and is in good condition.

Although 13 other members of his family who were also kidnapped with him are yet to be released.

Nigeria Records 12 New COVID-19 Cases As Third Wave Fears Heighten

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control recorded 12 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and two deaths on Sunday, 13th of July 2021.

Sunday’s new cases were reported from three states – Akwa Ibom (6), Ogun (4), and Rivers (2), summing up to 168,552 cases with 2,124 deaths in the Nation.

The Lagos State Government has raised the alarm of a possible third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and imposed restrictions and sanctions.

Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja threatens to issue a bench warrant of arrest on Former Aviation Minister Stella Oduah,now a Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial in the National Assembly over her continuous absence in court.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is alleging that Oduah misappropriated public funds while serving as a minister. She was billed to be arraigned on a 25-count alongside four others.

The other defendants are Gloria Odita, Nwosu Emmanuel Nnamdi, Chukwuma Irene Chinyere, Global Offshore, and Marine Limited, Tip Top Global Resources Limited, Crystal Television Limited, Sobora International Limited, and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) Nigeria Limited. They are charged with conspiracy and money laundering as well as maintaining anonymous bank accounts.

Jihadists wipe out all male Christians in two Nigerien towns, women flee

Jihadists in Niger Republic have wiped out all the male Christians in Fantio and Dolbel, two towns in the Tillabéri region in the south west.

Survivors of the attack, a group of women, with small children and babies fled to the Dori region of Burkina Faso.

AID TO THE CHURCH IN NEED (ACN), which reported the attacks, quoted the women as saying the terrorists attacked the towns twice, killing the men. The two towns were abandoned by the rest of the inhabitants.

This is the third parish in this part of Niger that has been abandoned due to terrorist attacks and incursions by these extremist groups that began to extend their reach into Burkina Faso and Niger in 2015.

Chidinma Ojukwu, the suspect arrested in connection with the death of Michael Ataga, CEO of Super TV, has denied killing him.

In a video which is currently in circulation, Chidinma said she knows nothing about Ataga’s death.

This is contrasting to her prior claim, confessing to have killed while he was trying to force himself on her. She had sought forgiveness, saying she did not want to die.

NIA Budgets N4.87bn to Monitor, Intercepts Calls and Messages

The National Assembly has approved a budget of N4.87bn to track, intercept, and monitor calls and messages on mobile devices, including Thuraya and WhatsApp.

The amount is part of the N895.8bn supplementary budget submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari last month and approved by both chambers of the federal parliament last week after increasing it by about N87bn.

Details of the supplementary budgets revealed that the NIA would spend N2,938,650,000 on the Thuraya interception solution while the WhatsApp interception solution will gulp N1,931,700,000.
