201 people hospitalised in kano after inhaling expired chemical

About 201 Kano residents have been hospitalized at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Sharada Industrial Hospital and Ja’en Hospital after inhaling expired chemical from a cylinder at a scrap metal collection point in Sharada Industrial area of the state.

It was gathered that the incident happened when a scrap collector dismantled the cylinder and the expired chemical escaped into the air making several residents, after inhaling the toxic substance, went down unconscious, coughing and vomiting.

Confirming the incident, the state police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, said the incident happened on Friday evening and he was yet to get details, adding that the area have been cordoned off, and experts have been deployed to the area who have already swung into action.

also, speaking about the incident the spokesperson for Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusuf, said his agency had brought the situation in the area under control.

“We have succeeded in bringing the situation under control. We got some experts from a private firm with technical know-how about the situation who brought some chemical to control the emission. The chemical was mixed with water from our water tank to neutralize the expired chemical spread”, Yusuf said.
