FirstNigeriaTV had been carrying out a study meant to determine the pattern of changes in the prices of foodstuffs in some markets within the Lagos metropolis since 2024.
The study now has come out with findings that in 2026, the year-on-year rate of increase had slowed down compared to 2024-2025, although food prices gradually had increased from month to month so far in 2026.
In the course of evaluations, it was discovered that between December 2024 and January 2025 (onset of a new year), a significant rise in costs of major foodstuffs occurred, followed by month to month slight increases, while between 2025 to 2026 (onset of the subsequent year), the rise was insignificant.
What this likely indicated was that between the end of 2025 and beginning of 2026, there were no or less pronouncements/regulations by government or its agencies that were capable of immediately jerking up food prices.
With an intention of filing the present costs of the various foodstuffs, FirstNigeriaTV’s Pauline Chinasa visited the popular Mushin market and came back with the following:
Local rice (50kg): ₦50,000 – ₦55,000
Foreign rice (50kg): ₦65,000 – ₦80,000
Basket of tomatoes: ₦45,000
Basket of pepper: ₦65,000
Bag of onions: ₦95,000
Live broiler chicken: ₦15,000 – ₦22,000
Cleaned layers chicken: ₦12,000 – ₦15,000
Croaker fish (medium): ₦4,500 – ₦5,500
