Commemorating this year’s UN Day on Crimes and Impunity Against Journalists, the Chairman, Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Dr Kasim Akinreti noted that in 2019, Nigeria was 13th in position on the global index of crimes and impunity against journalists but this year, the country was nowhere to be found on the list.

This, he said, was a very welcome development, a sign of better times ahead and a further step in the uplifting of the freedom of speech and expression which the profession hinges on.

He also noted that a major setback in the direction of success in this regard and which requires concerted attention was the recent clampdown on some media houses, aftermath of the #EndSars protests that rocked nationwide.

“Threats to life, imprisonment, harassment, persecution, intimidation and death had been forms of attacks on the noble profession”, he added.
