The Publisher of Nigerian NewsDirect newspaper, Dr Samuel Ibiyemi, has passed away at Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Ogun State.
His death which was announced in a statement on Tuesday, by his wife and children was after a brief illness. Late Dr Ibiyemi, who also founded the Great Grace Apostolic Church where he served as the presiding minister died at the age of 56.
He is survived by relatives, wife and children who expressed their sadness, stating that they had expected him to be with them for a longer period of time. According to his family, Ibiyemi was not only a journalist, but a former Nigerian Air Force soldier, he established Nigerian NewsDirect 13 years ago and it has become one of the country’s leading newspapers, contributing to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.
“Aside from being a loving father and very caring boss to his staff and younger colleagues, Ibiyemi was humility personified and a cheerful giver.
“He was, no doubt, a colossus of some sort, who bestrode the media world during his lifetime,” the statement read.
The Governor of Ogun state, Dapo Abiodun sent a condolence message to Ibiyemi’s family and media colleagues, describing him as a brilliant and versatile journalist who made significant contributions to society. Abiodun noted Ibiyemi’s commitment as a ‘stickler for truth’ and his ability to combine professionalism with business acumen. The governor expressed his sadness at the loss and recognized Ibiyemi’s lasting impact on the journalism profession.
“His death is a huge loss to his family and the journalism profession. His legacies are immense and indelible.
“We in Ogun State will miss this quintessential and courageous journalist of no mean repute. It is my prayer that God grant him eternal rest,” the governor said.
