Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Alhaji Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling stage-four cancer.
Hassan reportedly passed away at about 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, according to a burial announcement released by veteran actor Jide Kosoko. His death was also confirmed by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, in an emotional social media announcement.
The actor’s death came only days after his family publicly disclosed that he was battling stage-four cancer and appealed for urgent medical assistance as they sought treatment for the veteran actor.
Ogogo, who hailed from Ilaro, Ogun State, was one of the prominent figures in the Yoruba film industry. He built a career spanning several decades as an actor, filmmaker and director, becoming widely recognised for his memorable performances and contribution to Nigerian entertainment and Yoruba culture.
Following his death, tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, fans, government officials and members of the Yoruba film community, who have described him as an influential figure whose work left a lasting mark on the Nigerian film industry.
His remains were taken to his hometown, Ilaro, where funeral activities were scheduled to take place on Monday, August 24, in accordance with Islamic rites.
Ogogo’s passing marks the end of an era for one of the most recognisable faces of Yoruba cinema, leaving behind decades of performances and a legacy that continues to resonate with audiences and fellow practitioners.
