The Managing Director/Chief Executive, Royaltreat Travels Centre Limited, Venerable David Olusegun Bamgbose has listed the major problems plaguing the Nigeria’s aviation sector as severe operational and structural hurdles, primarily soaring aviation fuel (Jet A-1) costs, chronic foreign exchange (forex) shortages for maintenance, inadequate airport infrastructure, and recurring regulatory friction.

According to him, in an interview with FirstNigeriaTV, these major factors were also directly responsible for frequent flight delays, canceled trips, and escalating airfares.

“The high cost of jet fuel is the major slackening factor. Despite being a major crude oil producer, Nigeria imports refined Jet A-1. Global market shocks and forex volatility have caused astronomical price surges, with fuel now consuming over 40% of airlines’ operating costs and leading to service reductions”, he said.

Other crippling factors include:

Foreign Exchange Constraints: Airlines struggle to source US Dollars to pay for essential foreign maintenance, spare parts leasing, and training. This forces aircraft to be grounded for extended periods, decreasing fleet availability and schedule reliability.

Inadequate Infrastructure: Many airports lack modern navigation aids, sufficient runway lighting, and adequate passenger processing facilities. This makes scheduling fragile and restricts compliant operations according to global standards.

Regulatory & Union Friction: The sector is plagued by strikes and industrial disputes. For instance, aviation unions consistently issue ultimatums over unremitted statutory five percent Ticket Sales Charges (TSC) by operators, threatening agency funding and safety oversight.

Passenger Rights Violations: Due to constant route disruptions and schedule instability, consumer rights remain a major issue. While Part 19 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations mandates refunds, re-routing, and compensations for delays, passengers frequently report facing difficulties obtaining their due compensation or timely communication from airlines.
