The House of Representatives rejected a bill on Thursday that would bar public officials from sending their children to schools in other countries.
Some of them claimed that it violated Nigerians’ fundamental human rights. Others claimed that while certain public officials do not have authority over public finances, they should not be restricted from providing their children with the greatest education possible.
Representative Sergius Ogun supported the law, which aimed to ensure that only public officials who can demonstrate that they can afford international education for their children without using public funds are allowed to do so.
Lawmakers pleaded with Mr. Ogun to withdraw the bill, but he refused, and when it came up for a vote, a majority of lawmakers voted against it.
