The Managing Director of Gabol Motors Ltd, Mr. Gabriel Omomo, has commended the government’s efforts to improve transportation in Lagos State, noting that recent interventions have made movement easier for transport operators and commuters.
Speaking with FirstNigeriaTV Victoria Adekunle, Omomo described Lagos as one of Nigeria’s busiest cities, where economic activities begin very early each day.
According to him, many workers who resume work by 8:00 a.m. often have to leave their homes as early as 4:00 a.m. to beat the heavy traffic congestion.
“Lagos is a city that rewards hard work. The roads are busy almost throughout the day and even late into the night because people are constantly moving for one business or another,” he said.
Omomo explained that persistent traffic congestion often leads to disagreements among transport operators and between drivers and passengers, which can sometimes result in road accidents.
He also identified the high cost and occasional scarcity of fuel as major challenges facing transport operators, adding that these factors increase operating costs and eventually lead to higher transport fares for passengers.
The transport executive further pointed to poor road infrastructure and the heavy dependence on informal minibuses as additional challenges affecting the transportation sector.
Despite these challenges, Omomo praised the government for establishing the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), describing it as a significant step toward improving urban mobility. He noted that the authority has enhanced transportation for road users, transport operators, drivers, and passengers through strategic transport planning and infrastructure development.
He highlighted the introduction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which operates on dedicated lanes and serves over 200,000 passengers daily.
He also acknowledged the government’s continued investment in road construction, railway development, and water transportation, creating an integrated transport network across the state.
Omomo expressed optimism that sustained investment in transportation infrastructure would further reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance the overall commuting experience for Lagos residents.
