NASS passes sexual harassment bill to punish offenders in tertiary institutions

The National Assembly has passed a bill aimed at preventing and punishing sexual harassment by educators in tertiary institutions.

The bill which was initially passed by the Senate in 2020 but with different provisions, criminalizes sexual harassment of students by educators in tertiary institutions, and it seeks to impose severe sentences on offenders.

Presenting the report during a plenary session, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, stated that the conference committee had reconciled the different positions of both the Senate and the house of assembly.

Also, the National Assembly has passed another law compelling the integration of precautionary measures against gender-based and sexual assault into the curriculum of all levels of secondary education in Nigeria. This move is intended to further decrease the prevalence of these kinds of offences in the country.
