The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning to the public regarding a batch of unwholesome Sprite 50cl glass bottles that are currently circulating in Nigeria.

This notification from NAFDAC comes after a consumer complaint was received and investigated by the agency’s post-marketing surveillance unit.

According to NAFDAC, their investigation uncovered that over five crates of the implicated batch of Sprite 50cl glass bottles were contaminated with particles. In response, the agency has sampled the affected batch for laboratory analysis in their own laboratory. As a precautionary measure, NAFDAC has directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to carry out surveillance and remove the unwholesome product from circulation.

In a statement posted on its website, NAFDAC emphasized the need for a comprehensive inspection of the manufacturing site to determine the root cause of the contamination. This inspection will also ensure that the company, Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (Abuja plant), complies with marketing authorizations. In addition, the company has been instructed to recall the affected batch and report to NAFDAC for monitoring purposes.

The batch of unwholesome Sprite 50cl glass bottles in question bears the AZ6 22:32 batch number and was manufactured on April 4, 2023, by Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (Abuja plant). NAFDAC advises distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance in order to avoid consumption, sale, or distribution of the contaminated product. Individuals are urged to carefully inspect the authenticity and physical condition of the Sprite 50cl glass bottles.

Any person in possession of the implicated batch of Sprite 50cl glass bottles is urged to submit their stock to the nearest NAFDAC office. Furthermore, if anyone has consumed this product or experienced any adverse reactions or events after consumption, they are advised to seek immediate medical advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
