I believe in God, and I have a personal relationship with Him. However, I don’t necessarily believe that I have to identify as a religious Christian or belong to a particular religious institution to maintain that relationship.
I was raised Anglican, so Christianity is part of my upbringing and personal history. I also acknowledge that there have been difficult moments in my life when I have called upon the name of Jesus, whom Christians worship, and He has answered me. I will continue to call upon the name of Jesus and the name of God. My personal beliefs do not erase those experiences or my appreciation of what Jesus means to me.
I believe God is God universally.
I believe God is loving, merciful, just and understanding. I also believe human beings have free will and the ability to make their own decisions. We are imperfect, and I don’t believe every human mistake automatically makes someone a bad person or means God has abandoned them.
I have a mind of my own, and I believe in thinking, questioning and reaching my own understanding.
I recognise that my African ancestors had their own spiritual beliefs, traditions and ways of worship long before European missionaries arrived in Africa.
My personal relationships also reflect my appreciation of different backgrounds and beliefs. I respect people for who they are, not simply for what they believe or the religion they follow.
I have no desire to debate or impose my views on others.
I simply believe that spirituality is personal.
I can continue to call upon Jesus and God while maintaining my independence of thought.
I have experienced God’s blessings, protection and favour in my life, despite my imperfections and personal choices. I don’t pretend to be perfect, and I don’t believe I need to pretend.
Ultimately, I believe in having the freedom to understand God and spirituality through my own experiences, reasoning, conscience and exploration.
I am not looking for an argument, a religious label or someone to tell me what to believe.
GOD IS GOD. AND MY RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM IS PERSONAL.
