Controversial Nigerian musician Seun Kuti has sparked debate once more by downplaying the concept of monogamy and advocating for polygamy. During an appearance on the ‘Bahd & Boujee’ podcast, co-hosted by reality star Tolanibaj and actress Moet Abebe, Seun argued that powerful men ought to have multiple women.
“Monogamy doesn’t work. As a powerful man, you must have the support of numerous powerful goddesses,” Seun stated. “You know, women that are in your life because the ancestors want to put them there. You share with them.”
Seun emphasized that having multiple women is a sign of power and affluence while citing his late father and Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, as an example. Fela was widely known for marrying 27 women in one day in 1978, a bold move intended to preserve the honor of his female dancers and band members who were being labeled as “prostitutes” by the media.
However, Seun revealed that Fela’s relationships extended far beyond his 27 wives. “People only know of Fela’s 27 wives, they don’t know of his over 100 girlfriends that lived with us in the house,” Seun remarked.
Despite making a case for polygamy, Seun himself is publicly known to be married to one woman, his wife Yetunde Kuti.
