Amidst a leadership tussle with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party (LP) remains resolute in hosting its National Convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, on March 27th, 2024.

Confirming the preparations for the convention, LP’s Acting National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, assured that all arrangements are in place for a smooth event, dismissing rumors of a missing delegates’ list.

Ifoh clarified that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) possesses the delegates’ list, comprising representatives from each state, elected officials, LP Commissioners, and NWC members, with approximately 300 members expected to vote.

Regarding the internal disputes, Ifoh affirmed LP’s unity, stating that there has been a resolution with Hon. Afam Ogene, the LP caucus leader in the House of Representatives.

The NLC, however, intensifies its push for Abure’s removal, citing financial misconduct allegations by the party’s former National Treasurer, Ms. Oluchi Opara. The accusations include mismanagement of funds from nomination forms and donations, which Abure denies, attributing them to efforts aimed at reversing the party’s post-election progress.

Despite protests and calls for interim leadership, the LP has said it remains steadfast in its convention plans, with a determination to pull through the crisis while upholding its democratic processes.
