Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced fresh general election dates for 2023.
The presidential election was previously scheduled for February 18, 2023, according to the commission.
The chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, told journalists that new election dates had been set.
The presidential and National Assembly elections have been rescheduled for February 25, 2023, with gubernatorial and state assembly elections set for March 11, 2023.
The new date was set to comply with the stipulations of the Electoral Laws, which require that election notices be published at least 260 days before the elections.
The INEC chairman also stated that the electoral instructions would be released in due time.
The new Act mandates that INEC publish the election notice at least 360 days before the election.
Several organizations had urged the President to sign the law before February 22, 2022, to avoid INEC having to adjust the date to comply with the Act.
However, President Buhari signed it on February 25, 2022.
