Former General Manager, Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA) Mr Benedict Olawunmi Kehinde has counselled enforcement of Building Code and Strict Monitoring by agencies to halt the incessant collapse of buildings across Nigeria.
The recent collapse which claimed the lives of a father and his two sons in Egbu Umuenem, Otolo in Nnewi Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday, follows a string of tragic building collapses across Nigeria in the last few months, with an Events’ Centre collapse in Ijero LGA, Ekiti State only a day before.
The Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) Anambra chapter, speaking with reporters, had attributed the collapse on the use of substandard building materials, without due approval from regulatory agencies.
Weighing in on the ugly trend, Kehinde who hitherto served as GM, Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency, attributed the series of collapses to non- compliance with the building code and called for proper monitoring by agencies concerned going forward across Nigeria.
