***China is the largest world consumer of meat. A United States Agriculture Department’s very recent estimates says the Chinese will eat about 74 million tonnes of pork, beef and poultry this year, around twice as much as the United States. The earlier may not necessarily prove the source of a zoonotic disease like CoronaVirus but the fact that the Chinese enjoy meat consumption in different forms- raw, half-cooked, half-roasted and so on, could point to the likelihood of easy contract with communicable diseases. The Ebola virus that recently traversed the West African subregion had its roots traced to the deep wild and its inhabitants’ manner of consuming ‘unleavened’ meat.
*** The average rural Chinese pay little or no attention to their diets. A recent study presented that it is mainly urban and white-collar workers that pay attention to the wholesomeness of what they eat, to the extent that the Chinese government recently embarked on citizens’ sensitization on good eating habits.
*** The Chinese also love fresh and live foods a lot while consumption of wild animals is generally considered by them as a ‘mark of wellbeing’. There also exists a strong belief that rare and weird animals carry reservoirs of cure for ailments.
Although scientists have confirmed that the CoronaVirus is zoonotic, that is , transmitted from animals to humans, research has not determined the particular animal transmitter of the dreaded disease belonging to the same family as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).
