President Of Burkina Faso, Kabore detained by Mutinying Soldiers

Burkina Faso President Roch Kabore has been detained at a military camp by mutinying soldiers, two security sources and a West African diplomat said on Monday.

The Government had denied rumours on Sunday that a coup was underway as gunfire rang out for hours from several military camps, with mutinying soldiers demanding more support for their fight against militants.

Protesters had come out to support the mutineers on Sunday and ransacked the headquarters of Kabore’s political party. The government declared a curfew from 8 p.m. GMT to 5:30 a.m. GMT until further notice and closed schools for two days.

A spokesperson for the mutineers said they were demanding “appropriate” resources and training for the army in its fight against militants linked to the Daesh and al-Qaida terrorist groups and the resignation of the army and intelligence chiefs.

Frustration in the West African gold-producing country has grown in recent months over deteriorating security. The deaths of 49 military police in a militant attack in November prompted violent protests calling for Kabore to step down.

General Abdulsalami Explains More On How MKO Abiola Died

Former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar has clarified that the controversial winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, was not killed but died after taking ill in detention.

Abiola was incarcerated in government custody by the then head of state, General Sani Abacha for declaring himself as president of Nigeria after the 1993 polls, which he was adjudged to have won. He later died in detention in 1998.

Speaking 24 years after, General Abdulsalami said there was no truth in the insinuations that Abiola allegedly took poisoned tea before he passed on.

Abdulsalami, who spoke in an interview with Trust TV, debunked the speculation that Abiola died of alleged poisoned.

JAMB Announces Feb 12 For 2022 UTME, DE Registration

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Monday announced that the registration for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and the Direct Entry examinations will commence by February 12, 2022.

The Board made this known in its weekly bulletin released by the Director of Public Relations, Dr Fabian Benjamin.

In the timeline of events attached to the bulletin, the board announced that the “UTME/DE registration starts 12th February 2022 and ends 19th March 2022. Mock examination will be held on 20th April 2022. UTME is held from 20th to 30th April 2022.”

Edo State NLC Chairman Sunny Osayande Is Dead

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State chapter, Comrade Sunny Osayande, is dead. Osayande, elected on April 25, 2019, passed on in the early hours of Sunday.

His death is coming ahead of the planned February 1, 2022, workers rally against the proposed increase in the pump price of petroleum products by the Federal Government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The State Secretary of NLC, Comrade Barry Imade, who confirmed the death of Osayande, however did not give details on the cause of his death. It was however gathered that the late NLC Chairman had been down with an undisclosed ailment for some time.

Meanwhile, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has mourned the death of the labour leader, noting that the state was in great grief over the loss of a true comrade and an icon of the Nigerian labour movement.

Two Dead As Gunmen Storms Ondo Community

Gunmen have reportedly shot dead two persons at Okeluse Community in the Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State.

One of the victims was said to be the owner of a petrol station in the community, while the other was his attendant.

According to an eyewitness, the gunmen stormed the community at about 6pm on Sunday evening and opened fire on the two persons. Another resident of the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the killers as herdsmen who have allegedly been terrorising the local government.

The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident but said she would release details later.

Pastor bags life imprisonment for raping, impregnating 14-year-old in-law

A pastor/businessman has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping and impregnating his 14-year-old in-law.

The 38-year-old Ofure Rey Siakpere was sentenced on Wednesday, Jan. 19, by an Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court. Ofure was 35 at the time he committed the offence around March 2018 at his residence located at No. 10, Salaudeen Imam Street, Lagos.

In court, the minor recalled being overpowered and defiled at least 15 times by Siakpere who is married to her aunt. Ofure Siakpere, who may now spend the rest of his life in jail, was quite active on Twitter before he was charged to court and jailed for rape.

112 Illegal Refineries Uncovered In Rivers State

About 112 illegal refineries have been uncovered in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Chairman of the council, Samuel Nwanosike, told Channels Television that 99 percent of the discoveries were made in a particular community located along the OML 17 trunk lines.

The development comes on the heels of the recent efforts by the State Government to bring an end to the economic sabotage brought as a result of the illegal refineries, as well as the health implications resulting from soot pollution.

FirstNigeriaTv reports that Governor Nyesom Wike had pledged N460 million to the 23 local governments area chairmen to fight oil bunkering in the state. This implies that each chairman will receive N20 million to destroy illegal refinery sites that have been identified in their respective council areas.

Osinbajo Attends Funeral Thanksgiving Service Of Oba Oyewumi In Oyo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo earlier today, attended the funeral thanksgiving service of Oba Oladunni Oyewunmi, the 20th Soun of Ogbomoso at the First Baptist Church, Oke’Lerin, Ogbomoso. The traditional ruler, Oba Oyewumi died on Dec. 12, 2021, at the age of 95.

The vice president said he brought his condolences to Gov. Seyi Makinde, people of Ogbomosho and the entire family of the deceased on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to Osinbajo, the late Oyewumi had an exceptionally long, peaceful, and progressive reign, which deserved continuous thanksgiving to God Almighty.

He said, “The Ajagungbade III lived and conquered his people. He conquered illiteracy and underdevelopment. He loved his people, served his community and remains a source of inspiration.

Police Commission Meets with IGP Over Recruitment Saga

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has summoned the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, over the ongoing recruitment of 10,000 constables.

The development, FirstNigeriaTv learnt, became necessary following threats by the PSC workers to embark on a three-day warning strike over the recruitment saga.

A senior official, who confirmed the planned meeting, said, “The PSC management will meet with the police boss to reach a middle ground on the recruitment and avert the planned strike by the workers.” Meanwhile, the workers have finalised plans to embark on strike in protest against the commission’s alleged abdication of its responsibility to the police.

Disclosing this to newsmen on Saturday, the Chairman, Joint Union Congress, PSC chapter, Adoyi Adoyi, said the workers would this week hand over a three-day strike notice to the commission management if it failed to take over the ongoing recruitment of constables being handled by the police headquarters.

Adoyi disclosed that the PSC staff did not perform any roles in the 2021 recruitment exercise, adding that they merely attended the screening of constable applicants as observers, noting that the whole process was handled by police personnel.
