Nigeria Records 222 New Cases of Lassa Fever Infections, 2 Deaths

Nigeria recorded 222 new Lassa fever cases and two new deaths in one week across 15 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),  the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said in its weekly situation report on Monday.

According to the report, 69 persons are currently undergoing treatment in treatment centres. The report also stated that the two deaths were reported from Benue and Taraba.

It noted that 51 new cases were recorded in Bauchi; 76 in Edo; 46 in Ondo; three in Benue; nine in Taraba; 11 in Kaduna; six in Plateau; three in Kogi; one in Cross River; four in Ebonyi; two in Gombe; one in Katsina; four in the Federal Capital Territory FCT; two in Nasarawa; one in Rivers; and two in Enugu.

The Agency added that it has deployed national response teams to Nasarawa and FCT, distributed response commodities to states and treatment centres, and implementation of Lassa fever environmental response campaign in high burden states by the Federal Ministry of Environment.

JUST IN: Shoot Dead Any Prison Attacker – Aregbesola Directs Officers

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has instructed officers of the Nigerian Custodial Centres to shoot dead anybody who attempts to attack any of its facilities.

The Minister spoke on Monday while inspecting the Agodi Custodial Centre, Ibadan. He also inspected the new custodial centre at Olomi area of the town.

Aregbesola said the incessant attacks on the custodial centres in the country must stop, saying henceforth, any attempt to attack any prison would be met with brutal resistance. He said the facility is a red zone and the officers must therefore make it impregnable, adding that any attack on any correctional centre is an attack on the state and such must never be allowed again.

The minister said any attempt to attack correctional centres should be a suicide attempt and perpetrators must not be allowed to live to tell the story.

Gunmen Abduct Another Traditional Ruler In Plateau

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted HRH Da Gyang Balak Gut, the Da Gwom Rwei of Vwang District of Jos-south Local Government Area of Plateau State.

FirstNigeriaTv gathered that the Traditional Ruler was kidnapped on Sunday night on his way home to Vom, few metres from the Gate of the National Institute For Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru in Jos.

Spokesperson for the Plateau Police Command ASP Gabriel Ubah, Confirmed the incident. Vwang District is where the famous National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom, is situated in Plateau State.

The latest incident came barely a month after the abduction of another traditional ruler in Plateau State, HRH Charles Dakat, the Paramount Ruler of Gindiri, in Mangu Local Government Area.

43-year-old technocrat, Chukwuka Monye declares Ambition for president


Forty-three-year-old social innovator and change management expert, Chukwuka Monye has declared his intention to contest for the position of president in 2023.

FG Should Use All Means Necessary To End Banditry– Tinubu

The National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, says Nigeria will win the ongoing war against banditry, kidnapping, killing and other security challenges facing the country.

Tinubu gave this assurance on Sunday when he paid a condolence visit to Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina State over the recent assassination of his Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Rabe Nasir.

According to him, the country is larger and greater than those criminals, therefore, the Federal Government should adopt all the necessary measures to eliminate them.

“I urge the Federal Government, under the able leadership of President Muhammad Buhari as the Commander Chief of the Armed Forces, to use all necessary means to eliminate these people. “We share and we will continue to pray with the Katsina Government and also the people of the state to conquer the evil of kidnapping s and the killing of innocent people,“ Tinubu said.

Former President of Mali, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita Is Dead

Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, the former President of Mali who led the West African country from 2013 until he was ousted in a coup in 2020, died in Bamako on Sunday at the age of 76.

Keita won the historic 2013 presidential election held to restore democracy after a 2012 coup. But only seven years later he himself was ousted by another military takeover following months of public demonstrations against his presidency.

His early posts included ambassador to neighbouring Ivory Coast and diplomatic adviser to President Alpha Oumar Konare, who took office in 1992. Keita then served as prime minister from 1994 to 2000, and later as president of the National Assembly from 2002 to 2007.

He is survived by his wife, Aminata Maiga Keita, and their four children.

NDLEA Seized 1.5 Million Pharmaceutical Opioids, Arms, Ammunition

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Friday intercepted about one million, five hundred thousand tablets and capsules of pharmaceutical opioids such as Tramadol, Exol-5 and Diazepam loaded in Onitsha, Anambra state and heading to Yauri, Kebbi State.

The same day, another 425,000 Diazepam tablets were recovered at Segemu, in Kano state.

In addition, a total of One Million Four Hundred and Thirteen Thousand, Three Hundred and Forty Four Naira (N1, 413,344) was seized along with arms and ammunition from a suspected bandit and a drug kingpin in Plateau state while over 137.754 kilograms of assorted illicit drugs were recovered during interdiction operations across seven states in the past week.

The Agency disclosed the developments in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi. The Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (Retd) while commending the officers and men assured them that their sacrifices, dedication to duty and exceptional feats will not go without commendation and rewards.

Buhari Orders Military Action Against Bandits In Niger

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed a major military operation in Niger State which has faced continued attacks on its communities by bandits and remnants of Boko Haram terrorists fleeing theatres of war in the North-western and North-eastern parts of the country”.

In a directive to the Defence Headquarters, the President asked the military to respond robustly to the cases of killings and kidnappings in the State and to give effect to the strategic objectives through the use of force.

In his message to the government and people of Niger State, President Buhari said, “I would like to express sincere sympathies to the government and people of the State following recent security incidents.”

The President reiterated that security is a responsibility of every member of the community and only through solidarity and cooperation with law enforcement agencies can we defeat the problems finally.

Bandits Storm Kaduna Village on a Revenge Mission

Gunmen suspected to be bandits on Sunday attacked Damaturu Village, Damari, in the Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The bandits, according to reports, were on a revenge mission.

“They came on many motorbikes, one bike was carrying the rider and two others. They showed no mercy. They were on rampage…it was rumoured they came on a revenge mission. “Last Friday, many bandits died when the boys of Malam Abba fought members of another gang. Those who came to Damari this morning were on a reprisal mission. They were told that Damari and environs were under the authority of Malam Abba”, source quoted by Vanguard.”

The PPRO in Kaduna State, ASP Mohammed Jalige was quoted to have said he had contacted the officer in charge of the area to link up with other security agents so as to rescue the situation in Damari.

Bandits Kill 3, Kidnap 28 In Fresh Attack On Niger Communities

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed three people and abducted at least 28 others in Farin-Shinge, Kulho, Jigawa and Dogo Fadama communities of Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State

The attacks were carried out from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning in the communities.

The Vice-Chairman of Kontagora Local Government Area, Aliyu Makiga, who confirmed the attack on the Farin Shinge community, said that the gunmen came to Tegina in large numbers to carry out the attack. The State Police Command has not issued any statement on the development.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday ordered full military operation against bandits and other terrorists in any part of Niger State. The directive was contained in a statement issued by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity.
