Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), has been freed by the Nigerian Police authorities after being detained for 10 days.
Ojukwu went missing on May 1, and his whereabouts were unknown to his colleagues, family, and friends.
According to the FIJ, Ojukwu was detained by the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Inspector-General of Police. His phone numbers were switched off, and his colleagues and family were left in the dark about his whereabouts.
After a tense 10 days, Ojukwu was finally released on Friday. The FIJ confirmed his release on their website, stating, “Daniel Ojukwu, the FIJ reporter who was abducted by men of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Inspector-General of Police, has regained freedom after 10 days in police captivity.”
Ojukwu’s detention had raised concerns about press freedom and the safety of journalists in Nigeria, leading to a protest for his release.
As the FIJ noted, “Ojukwu went missing on Wednesday May 1, his numbers switched off and his whereabouts unknown to colleagues, family and friends.” His release is a relief to all who were concerned about his safety and well-being.
