A group of dutiful, conscientious and renowned architects on a new foundation– Association of Nigerian Chartered Architects (ANCA) have resolved to evacuate the wreck and stench that hitherto plagued the industry in Nigeria. While embarking on research and evaluation of the existing systems operative in the industry in the past, this group of diligent professionals met with brick walls and hence ultimately decided to either break the existing blockades or do away with the ‘bad eggs’ of the previous system.

As a family, the group became poised to do all in its might to ensure the continued growth, expansion and survival of the architecture industry in Nigeria.
This bold resolution by ANCA was again brought to the fore at a recent inaugural meeting of the ANCA District 0101 held on 23rd November, this year, at the Seminar Room, Department of Architecture, University of Lagos, themed—‘The Architecture Community: Disrupting the Cycle of Inept Professional Competency’.
In an interview with FirstNigeriaTV at the inaugural meeting, the association’s Protem President, Mr Emmanuel Omatsone spoke strongly on the failure of successive governments to create an enabling environment for indigenous architectural practice to thrive; the relationship between ANCA and the Nigerian Institute of Architects; the need for strict regulations to ensure compliance to professional ethics by architects; and the urgent need to revive the Nigerian architecture industry widely claimed by some practitioners as approaching extinction.

A major stakeholder in the nation’s architecture industry and a Fellow of ANCA, Professor Joseph Igwe also shed light on the major cause of building collapse in Nigeria and the expected roles of all major stakeholders in the building industry in general in complying with statutory standards.
