An aviation consultant and Managing Director, Royaltreat Travels Centre Limited, Revd. Olusegun David Bamgbose has called on government to, as a matter of urgency, pave way for the emergence and full establishment of a national carrier for Nigeria’s aviation industry in order to encourage the availability of competitive pricing options.

According to him, the emergence of a national carrier would lead to regulation of costs of aviation services as the national carrier would function to curb the excesses of flight operators who, as at this period, determine costs without regulation.

Further suggestions by Bamgbose include the building of more terminals with modern facilities and upgrading of existing ones to take good care of travellers’ needs; ensuring that safety standards are strictly adhered to by airline operators; availability of dollars (forex) to airlines to enable them remit their proceeds to their home countries; possibility of flight schedules with direct connections to various cities of the world.

Others are creation of robust government policies as they affect the airline exchange rate; putting an effective body or policy in place to address the excesses of foreign airlines; promotion of tourism by developing tourists’ sites to international standards and ensuring safety of tourists who might be willing to visit the centres; and regular meetings of government with stakeholders in the industry with a view to addressing numerous challenges that impact negatively on the industry.
