Delta State Independent Electoral Commission’s Presiding Officer slumped and died on Saturday at Onicha-Ugbo Community in Ika North Local Government Area of the state.
This is even early before the polls, as suspected unidentified heavily armed gunmen attacked Ughelli Local Government Secretariat around 8:30 am this morning shooting sporadically and set ablaze the secretariat building.
It was learnt that the presiding officer, whose name is yet to be known, was trying to carry a consignment of electoral materials when he slumped and gave up the ghost.
An eyewitness, Chike Diji confirmed the report noting that the DSIEC official may have died due to some health challenge.
He explained that it was at the point of carrying a consignment of electoral materials that the Presiding Officer slumped and died.
The member representing the people of Aniocha North in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi confirmed the report, describing it was “quite unfortunate.”
The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the area, Prince Victor Egbune also confirmed the report.
Egbune said the incident occurred in the presence of security agents contrary to report that the Presiding Officer was poisoned.
In his words, ”He just came in and carried out a consignment with electoral materials. It was at the point of carrying the second one that he slumped and died.
“Nobody touched him. Nobody did anything to help.”
