The Code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja has thrown more light on the indefinite adjournment in the false assets declaration trial of Senate President, Bukola Saraki last Thursday.
In a statement by the tribunal, it said that the decision to adjourn the matter indefinitely was taken in the interest of justice and the right to fair hearing based on section 36 of the constitution and the right to appeal the decision of a lower court.
The tribunal noted that the reason for its response is to correct the erroneous impression over the adjournment insinuating that the CCT Chairman, Justice Danladi Umar, outrightly adjourned the trial indefinitely without reasons.
The tribunal maintained that since both prosecution and defense counsels had filed an appeal before the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the court of appeal, it will be hesitant to proceed pending the determination of the appeal, which will determine the outcome of judgement of the tribunal on count 4, 5 and 6.
The CCT held that to be on a safe side, it decided to tarry for a while so that the integrity and powers of the Supreme Court would not be jeopardized.
The tribunal is of the view that the issue raised by the defence counsel is so germane and has to wait for the outcome of the appeal before it proceeds.
