Nigeria has introduced a new type of crude oil called Cawthorne, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has put it up for tender, inviting buyers from around the world.
But why would Nigeria introduce a new crude grade when the country already has famous crude grades that refineries know and trust?
The reason is simple: not all crude oil is the same.
Different refineries are designed to process different types of crude oil, depending on the products they want to produce and the technology they use.
Think of it like buying a computer. One company may produce a computer designed specifically for gamers, while another produces one designed for office workers. Both are computers, but they are made for different users. The same principle applies to crude oil.
Cawthorne is a light and sweet crude, which can be attractive to refineries because it can be processed into products such as petrol, diesel and jet fuel.
However, introducing a new crude grade is only the beginning. The bigger question is whether Nigeria can produce Cawthorne consistently, ship it on time and maintain enough supply to meet the demands of international buyers month after month.
One successful cargo is not enough. The global market will be watching to see whether Nigeria can deliver a second cargo, a third and many more after that.
If Cawthorne proves to be reliable and competitive, Nigeria could do more than simply sell another type of crude oil. It could create job opportunities, stimulate economic growth, attract investment and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global energy market.
This development also comes as Nigeria pursues the presidential mandate to increase crude oil production to 3 million barrels per day and gas production to 12 billion cubic feet per day by 2030.
The expansion of crude oil production and the development of new crude grades such as Cawthorne could also create opportunities across the oil and gas value chain, from production and transportation to storage, shipping and other supporting services.
The big question now is: Can Cawthorne become Nigeria’s next big break in the global energy market?
