The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday rejected President Muhammadu Buhari’s plea to remove a clause in the newly-signed electoral act that prohibits political appointees from participating in party primaries or seeking public office.
When the bill was tabled for a second reading, the red chamber rejected it by voice vote.
Clause 84 (12) disenfranchises political appointees, including ministers and commissioners, according to Buhari, who signed the electoral act reform bill into law.
Later, he filed a formal request to the national assembly to have the clause removed.
