The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has insisted that the Anambra Central senatorial district rerun election slated to hold today will go ahead despite efforts by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate urging the Court of Appeal in Abuja to halt the poll.
Solomon Umoh (SAN), counsel to an aspirant in the December 7, 2014 primary of the PDP, Senator Annie Okonkwo, had appeal against the decision of the appellate court of November 20, 2017.
In his appeal, he had prayed the Abuja Court of Appeal to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting the rerun election.
But ruling on the matter, a three-man panel of justices presided by Justice Abubakar Datti Yahaya, held that the earlier order made on November 20, 2017 directing the INEC to conduct election for the senatorial seat within 90 days cannot be reversed so as not to make mockery of the judiciary.
Okonkwo’s counsel had when the case came up on Thursday prayed the court to order a postponement of the election slated to hold today, January 13, 2018 pending the determination of his application.
The development came just as a Federal High Court in Abuja will today (Friday) decide the application by INEC asking it to review its December 13, 2017, ruling which ordered the commission to recognise Obiora Okonkwo as the winner of the 2015 Anambra Central senatorial district election.
