The Federal Government has announced that the demolition of buildings on the right of way of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road will commence on Saturday. This was made known by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Korede Keisha, during a press briefing on Thursday.
Keisha urged all affected residents whose houses have been marked for demolition to visit the Ministry’s Secretariat in Lagos to complete the necessary processes. She warned that the demolition squad would begin removing marked properties on Saturday.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project, estimated to cost N15 trillion, aims to connect Lagos to Cross River, passing through six states. The project has faced criticism from many Nigerians, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, who have described it as a misplaced priority and a fraud, respectively.
However, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has dismissed these criticisms, stating that they are a “gross misrepresentation of facts and figures” aimed at misleading Nigerians. He emphasized that the project is a prudent investment and will be completed in eight years.
Umahi also defended the project’s cost, stating that it will cost N4 billion per kilometer, totaling N15 trillion for the 700-kilometer road. He assured that the project will be completed in eight years, despite criticisms.
The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to the project, and has urged affected residents to cooperate with the demolition process to ensure the project’s successful completion.
