Renowned gospel singer, Nathaniel Bassey, has taken a step towards seeking justice in petition to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, concerning alleged criminal defamation and cyberstalking by four individuals.

Bassey, through his legal representatives – Peter Abraham, Uche Matthew, Gbenga Agunloye, and Anthony Abia – submitted the petition on April 1, 2024, urging the police to investigate and prosecute the accused.

The controversy erupted when some social media users made unsubstantiated claims that Bassey was the father of a child belonging to another gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo Blessed, whose husband had recently shared pictures of their son online.

The petition stated the distress caused to Bassey, emphasizing his influential role as a gospel music minister with a global impact.

The accused individuals, identified as Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and Dj Spoiltkid, allegedly made and shared said defamatory message across various social media platforms, tarnishing Bassey’s reputation.

The lawyers condemned the accused actions, citing violations of criminal codes and cybercrimes laws, which carry severe repercussions for individuals and their reputations.

Bassey’s legal team stressed the urgent need for intervention to prevent further damage to their client’s image and reputation, calling for swift investigation and prosecution to serve as a deterrent.
