A 29-year-old fuel tank installer named simply Ahmed suffocated and died while working on a petrol tank at a filling station along Offa Garage Road in the Kwara State capital on Saturday.
Hassan Adekunle, spokesman for the Kwara State Fire Service, said the incident occurred near Adisco office, Ajase-Ipo Road, Ilorin, in a statement released on Sunday.
The man was believed to have traveled from Ibadan with his supervisor for the job, but he suffocated and died while performing maintenance on a malfunctioning petrol tank at the filling station.
Firefighters were able to extricate the body from the tank and deliver it to its boss, Abdulbasit Oladimeji.
According to the report, the fatality was apparently reckless since he began working without putting on the required safety equipment.
The statement added, “A 29-year-old tank installer/maintainer named Ahmed was retrieved dead from a fuel tank at a popular filling station in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara.”
“The horrific tragedy occurred at No. 157 Bovas Filling Station, opposite Adisco Ajase-Ipo Road, Ilorin, last night at about 19:25 hrs.
“For the job, the victim man traveled from Ibadan with his boss. He suffocated and died in the petrol tank at the filling station while they were undertaking maintenance work inside it.
“However, firemen were able to remove the body from the tank and pass it over to Mr Abdulbasit Oladimeji, his supervisor.”
“According to the report, the fatality was too negligent with his life to put on the appropriate safety gear before starting work.”
