The present civilian government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari strongly believes that tackling insecurity in the country requires concerted efforts of miltary and para- military agencies in effecting border policing in a manner that ensures the alleviation of the influx of persons from neighbouring countries, even as some Nigerians still hold the belief that insecurity in the nation is orchestrated by tribal and political sentiments among indigenes in the entity.
Driven by the resolve to achieve success in this bid, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in conjunction with the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons (PRESCOM) recently held a two-day training of trainers workshop for border security operatives.
The workshop which was attended by representatives of all security agencies related to national borders was held at the Armed Forces Resettlement Centre, Oshodi, Lagos.
Resource persons are the occasion included Air Commodore J.F. Adeleke (rtd.), a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) and Consultant to the UNDP on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW); Dr. Atsiya Godiya Pius, Deputy Director, Nassarawa State University, Keffi while the event’s direction and moderation was by Mr. Dickson Orji, Programme Co-ordinator, PRESCOM and President, West African Action Network on Small Arms (WAANSA-Nigeria).
