Video: Senator Adebayo Osinowo a.k.a Pepper dies at 64

Pepperito is Gone
The lawmaker representing Lagos-East Senatorial district, Adebayo Osinowo aka Pepper, has died at the age of 64.
Osinowo was inaugurated as a senator one year ago.
A former Lagos State lawmaker, Segun Olulade, confirmed this
“It is true. He passed away after a brief illness,” Olulade said.
Meanwhile, the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, said he received with shock and sadness the news.
Lawan condoled with Senator Osinowo’s family, friends, political associates, and also the government and people of Lagos State over the loss.
Osinowo, who until his death represented Lagos East Senatorial, first made his mark at the Lagos Civil Service and also at the Lagos State House Assembly where he served four terms before his election to the Senate.
Lawan said, “Osinowo served his country creditably as a Distinguished Senator at the Ninth Senate which marked its first anniversary only last week.”

Osinowo was the Chairman of the Committee on industries.
The Senate President said, “The pains of Senator Osinowo’s untimely departure will be felt by his Distinguished colleagues and the National Assembly in general.”

Nigeria records 717 rape cases in five months, says IGP
Published

Olalekan Adetayo, Abuja

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on Monday said a total of 717 rape cases were reported nationwide between January and May this year.
The disclosure came at a time protests are holding across the country against increasing cases of rape and defilement of minors.
Vera Omozuwa, a 22-year-old student of the University of Benin, was reportedly raped and killed in an empty church in Benin City recently.
18-year-old Barakat Bello was also raped and macheted to death in Ibadan, Oyo State recently.

The development led to last week’s decision by the Federal Executive Council to go tough on culprits.
Speaking with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday, Adamu said out of the 717 cases, investigations have been concluded in 631 cases with the suspects already in court.
He said investigations were still ongoing in the remaining 52 cases.

The police boss further disclosed that 799 suspects were arrested in connection with the cases.
Adamu spoke after he joined the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed; and the Minister of Women Affairs Development, Pauline Tallen; to meet the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
He said, “It has come to the public knowledge now that because of the COVID-19 restrictions, we have a surge in cases of rape and gender-based violence.

“Law enforcement agents have been dealing with these cases, and in most cases, members of the public are not aware of the actions that the law enforcement agents have been taking.

Akwa Ibom community destroyed by heavy floods seeks gov’s help
Published

Patrick Odey, Uyo

No fewer than 100 houses have been destroyed and 300 persons displaced in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State following a downpour in the area.
It was gathered that the rain, which started about 3 am on Sunday and ended around 12pm, destroyed houses and submerged large sections of the metropolis.
Meanwhile, residents of the area have lamented the effect of the flooding on their houses.
A resident of Eket, who simply identified himself as Umoetuk, said areas mostly affected include Grace Bill, Marina Junction, and Udoh Umoh.

Another resident, Sam Abia, said when it rains for two hours the entire houses around Grace Bill are usually affected.
“Flooding around Grace Bill is a normal sight here. When it rains for two hours, the whole area around the Grace Bill road is always flooded,” he said.
A worker with the Eket LG, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, described the Sunday’s flooding as “a perennial problem”.

He called on both the council chairman, Frank Archibong, and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, to come to the aid of the people by constructing a drainage system to address the problem.
“This is a yearly occurrence. Last year, we had the same problem and it’s here again this year.
“We are appealing to the chairman of Eket and our Governor who is from this senatorial district to address this problem by constructing a drainage system to tackle the problem,” he said
