Vaccination Week : Yobe State, UNICEF, WHO Kicks off 2024 African Vaccination Week

Yobe State government, in partnership with UNICEF, WHO, and other stakeholders, has launched the 2024 African Vaccination Week. The week-long event aims to raise awareness about the importance of immunization and promote national health strategies, particularly in the area of vaccination.

According to Dr. Babagana Kundi-Machina, Executive Secretary of the State Primary Healthcare Management Board, “Vaccination remains the most effective way to ensure disease prevention and eradication in any given society, and as parents/caregivers, it is mandatory for us to ensure that our family, especially children, and all eligible persons are protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.”

Dr. Kundi-Machina emphasized the importance of regular immunization, stating, “A total of seven visits are expected to health facilities from birth to 9 years, so it’s crucial for parents and caregivers to know the immunization schedule.” He encouraged parents to ensure their children receive all required vaccines at the right time and in the right number.

Dr. Hamisu Alhassasn, State Coordinator of the World Health Organisation, described the 50th anniversary of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) as a significant milestone in preventing and controlling infectious diseases. “Immunisation prevents serious and life-threatening diseases, saves lives, reduces transmission of diseases, protects vulnerable populations, eliminates diseases, costs, protects the future generation, and boosts economic growth,” he said.

The partners emphasized that immunization is a safe and effective way to protect individuals and communities from infectious diseases. They encouraged Yobe residents to embrace and promote immunization, stating, “Let us work together to protect our families, protect our communities, and promote a healthy society for all.”
