The Betrayal of June 12 and the Restless Grave of MKO Abiola- Unfiltered Realities with Roland Bassey

▪️The Reality Check
📍The image of a clenched fist wrapped in the green-white-green ribbon is deeply symbolic. Historically, the clenched fist is a universal emblem of resistance, solidarity, and defiance against oppression. By wrapping it in the national colors, the graphic attempts to evoke the fierce, unyielding spirit of the June 12 struggle—the very grit and blood of ordinary citizens and martyrs like Chief MKO Abiola who fought to wrest power from military dictatorship.
But when deployed by the state or viewed in the context of our current governance, that beautiful graphic becomes a tragic irony.

📍But let us strip away the plastic patriotism and face the unfiltered truth. What are we truly celebrating? Is it the substantive triumph of the people’s will, or are we merely participating in an annual ritual of state-sponsored hypocrisy?

📍If the late Chief MKO Abiola—the ultimate martyr of our democratic struggle—could look up from his grave today, he would not be celebrating. He would be turning in absolute torment and fury at the monumental betrayal of the sacred mandate he laid down his life to defend.

📍The Precedent of Deception
June 12 was never supposed to be just a day off from work or a routine calendar fixture for politicians to deliver hollow, teleprompter-led speeches. It was bought with blood. It was cemented by the supreme sacrifice of Abiola, who chose a prison cell and ultimately death over compromising the collective sovereignty of the Nigerian people. He ran on a ticket promised to banish poverty and usher in an era of shared prosperity.

📍Fast forward to our current political dispensation. The very leaders who now sit in the lavish corridors of power—many of whom rode to prominence on the coattails of the June 12 struggle—have systematically dismantled everything Abiola stood for. They have turned democracy into an exclusive plutocracy where the rich get immune to the laws, and the poor get buried by them.

▪️The Con: Hiding Governance Failure Behind Holydays

📍Our current political class has perfected the art of using democratic symbols to mask autocratic realities. They hand us a public holiday while stripping away our economic dignity.

▪️The Unfiltered Truth:
📍It is a profound insult to Abiola’s memory that the nation he died to liberate is now choked by unprecedented economic hardship, staggering inflation, widespread insecurity, and a ruling class that remains completely detached from the agony of the masses. They have replaced the military boots of 1993 with institutional oppression, weaponized poverty, and electoral manipulation. To celebrate “democracy” in a nation where the citizen’s vote is repeatedly devalued and their stomach is empty is the ultimate gaslighting.

▪️The Critical Demands

📍If our leaders want to honor the legacy of MKO Abiola, we must demand that they stop the festive charades and answer these hard questions:

▪️Where is the “Farewell to Poverty”? Abiola’s manifesto promised to eradicate deprivation. Why has this dispensation instead supervised the descent of millions more Nigerians into multi-dimensional poverty?

▪️Account for the Attack on Free Speech:
📍A true democracy thrives on civic space and the right to dissent. Why are critical voices, journalists, and peaceful protesters routinely harassed by the state apparatus?

▪️Restore Electoral Integrity:
📍June 12, 1993, remains a benchmark because it was free, fair, and credible. Why are our modern elections characterized by statistical anomalies, institutional compromise, and a total disregard for the voter’s true intent?

▪️The Final Whistle
📍Chief MKO Abiola did not die so that a tiny political elite could capture the resources of over 200 million people for their personal aggrandizement. He did not sacrifice his life so that governance could become a vehicle for propaganda, deceit, and unbridled arrogance.

▪️To the political class
📍Keep your flowery speeches and your glossy graphics. Until democracy translates into food on the table, safety on our highways, integrity in our ballot boxes, and accountability in high places, your “Happy Democracy Day” is nothing but a sham. Stop insulting the ghost of MKO Abiola. It is time to stop the charade and face the unfiltered reality.
