Because of the present day lifestyle-induced nutritional deficiencies and diseases’ predisposition, bitters of several classes, formulations/contents and functions have invaded healthcare products’ markets.
And a good range of the products are fake/substandard/unregulated/unregistered, thereby constituting hazards to consumer health.
According to Dr. Olakunle Olawaiye of Bioport Health Services/Diagnostics Centre, Ikeja, Lagos during a chat with FirstNigeriaTV, the following are hazards associated with consuming any forms for bitters:
*** Severe developmental abnormalities, miscarriage, or foetal death ….studies have shown that because many traditional herbal remedies are unregulated and lack standardised dosing, consumption by pregnant women during the first trimester could be deleterious to the developing embryo.
***Liver and Kidney complications…..in a process of toxicity, prolonged and daily intake of unregulated herbal mixtures can elevate liver enzymes, leading to severe inflammation or liver damage over time…….also in a process of straining, high doses can burden the kidneys and have been linked to potential renal toxicity.
***Blood Sugar Fluctuations…..for individuals suffering from diabetes, a good number of bitter ingredients are known to lower blood sugar severely/dangerously, which can be lethal when mixed with insulin or other glucose-lowering drugs.
*** Medication Interactions…..the herbs and alcohol used in many bitter formulas can negatively impact prescription drugs by acting to modify their efficacy and functioning.
***Alcohol-Related Risks…..because many popular commercial bitters are alcohol-based tonics, excessive intake can lead to alcohol addiction, chronic liver disease, and other systemic health issues if abused as a recreational drink rather than used medicinally.
***Gastrointestinal Irritation and Distress…….overconsumption can trigger stomach troubles such as pains, nausea, and vomiting……………… overproduction of stomach acid can also occur which may worsen or lead to acid reflux, heartburn, and gastric ulcers.
Olawaiye strongly advised that patients consult with registered health personnel to attend to their health issues/problems rather than resort to self medication and patronage of quacks.
