Magnesium is an essential mineral element that is actively involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the human body.
Its involvement and activity spreads across muscle and nerve function regulation, bone density support, steady heartbeat maintenance, blood sugar control, and energy and protein production.
According to a Lagos based nutritionist, Dr. Mrs. Trade Omonijo, all the above mentioned functions of the mineral are deliberately directed at ameliorating the consequences of aging and senescence since they all act across rejuvenating pathways.
She explained the therapeutic effects of magnesium in the human body including:
Muscle and Nerve Relaxation– by acting as a natural muscle relaxant, helping to prevent cramps and spasms. It also regulates neurotransmitters to help manage stress and anxiety.
Bone Strength– by directly supporting bone formation and density. Over half of the body’s magnesium is stored in the bones.
Heart Health– by helping to regulate blood pressure and supports the transport of electrolytes across cell membranes, maintaining a normal heart rhythm.
Metabolism– by helping the body metabolize glucose, which is critical for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.
Digestion– by supporting bowel regularity by relaxing intestinal muscles and drawing water into the intestines to help relieve constipation.
She advised older adults to always call for assessment of their body magnesium levels to ensure they are optimum anytime they go for health checks.
She also mentioned sources of dietary magnesium including dark leafy greens (like spinach), nuts, seeds, beans, and whole grains, adding that if deficiency was suspected the dietary.sources could be combined with supplements such as magnesium glycinate or citrate.
