The police command in Yobe State through the PPRO Dungus Abdulkareen has confirmed the arrest of two soldiers in connection with the killing of an Islamic cleric, Sheik Goni Aisami Gashua on Friday night near Jajimaji in Karasuwa Local Government Area of Yobe state.
He also said that the two soldiers had confessed to the crime but, “the police are still stretching their investigation further to burst what could possibly be a big syndicate or an organised crime”.
Some sources who spoke with newsmen, revealed that the Sheikh gave one of the soldiers a lift in front of the 241 RECCE Battalion at Nguru on his way from Kano going to Gashua but was killed by the soldier who also took his car.
The source said that the car got stuck in the mud, making it difficult for the military men to drive it, so they called some vigilantes for help but one of the volunteer security men, upon arrival, spotted some blood on the ground and on one of the cars and became curious.
They invited the police, who found the Sheikh’s blood-soaked body and immediately arrested the soldiers.
Meanwhile Sheikh Goni’s body has been laid to rest according to Islamic rites in his hometown Gashua.
Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has condole with the family of the late Sheikh.
Buni, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Mamman Mohammed, has ordered for the full investigation of the death of the cleric.
