Nigerian poet and author, Olufemi Oluwafemi has released Ba Muso: Chants of a People, a collection of twenty-four poems accompanied by original commentary. The book arrives in the week Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, giving its four-decade record of national life particular relevance.
Ba Muso is Hausa for “We do not agree.” Oluwafemi first encountered the expression during his National Youth Service (NYSC) year in Sokoto in 1988. It subsequently became an enduring refrain in his relationship with Nigeria: not a rejection of the country, but a refusal to accept failed promises, poor leadership and diminished national expectations as the limit of what Nigeria can become.
Written between 1983 and 2025, the poems move through military rule, democratic transition, civic disappointment, resistance and hope. Each poem is followed by commentary explaining the circumstances in which it was written and its place within Nigeria’s unfolding story.
“Ba Muso is not a rejection of Nigeria. It is a refusal to accept that what we have become is all we can be. These poems are my record of the nation I have lived through and my affirmation of the one we must still build,” Oluwafemi said.
The collection moves from history and nation-building through power and oppression to dissent, resistance and visions of national possibility. Its combination of poetry and commentary allows readers to encounter both the emotional force of each poem and the context behind it.

Olufemi Oluwafemi is a Nigerian poet, author, corporate executive, songwriter and Christian minister. A Political Science graduate with an MBA, he currently serves as Head of Sales at Aero Contractors. His writing engages citizenship, leadership, faith, memory and hope.
