The governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, has selected Hassan Muhammed Gusau, a senator from Zamfara’s central senatorial zone, as the state’s new deputy governor.
The appointment came after the state House of Assembly impeached the ex-deputy governor, Mahdi Aliyu-Gusau, when it resumed session on Wednesday.
Senator Hassan was confirmed as the new deputy governor by the same lawmakers minutes after Aliyu-Gusau was impeached.
In June 2021, Senator Gasau switched from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Mustafa Kaura, the Assembly’s spokesperson, said in a statement that the former deputy governor had been found guilty of all charges leveled against him.
“The House found him guilty of the offences leveled against him,” Kaura said. “The House found him guilty of the offences leveled against him, which were submitted earlier today in the House and afterward read on the floor of the chamber by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Nasiru Mu’azu Magarya.”
“Magarya told the plenary that the committee set up to investigate the former Deputy Governor found him guilty of all the charges leveled against him, and he ordered his colleagues to vote affirmatively for the Deputy Governor to be impeached as required by law.”
Kaura further stated, “20 out of 22 members voted in favour of the impeachment, while the only PDP member of the House, Hon. Salihu Usman Zurmi, was conspicuously absent during today’s plenary.”
“Speaker Magarya declared Barr Mahdi Aliyu Muhammad Gusau’s impeachment as the substantive Deputy Governor of the state, having received the required number of votes as specified by the constitution.”
