The Lagos State Government announced on Friday its intention to conduct material integrity tests on six nearby structures in response to the recent fire incident on Dosunmu Street, Lagos Island.
The Inferno, which engulfed four buildings and resulted in the loss of goods worth millions of naira, prompted the decision to assess the structural soundness of surrounding properties, according to Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
Speaking at the site of the tragedy, Oke-Osanyintolu said it was important to ensure the safety of the affected area. He stated that any buildings found lacking in structural integrity during the assessments would be promptly demolished to prevent potential collapse.
Describing the events of the fire outbreak, Oke-Osanyintolu said the emergency services response was swift as LASEMA arrived at the scene within minutes of the incident and assumed control within twenty minutes.
While addressing concerns over fire safety regulations, Oke-Osanyintolu urged adherence to established protocols, emphasizing the necessity of proper storage practices and building materials to minimize the risk of future incidents.
Responding to criticisms by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the availability of enough water to fight the fire, he stated that the Lagos State emergency services deployed adequate equipment and personnel promptly to contain the fire
