Kenya Government declares Odinga’s group criminal

The Kenyan government has declared the opposition coalition’s National Super Alliance (NASA)’s wing, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) led by Raila Odinga, as an organised criminal group.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, in a gazette notice in reference to Organised Crimes Act, 2010 pronounced ban of the movement.

Matiang’i issued the notice after NASA leader Odinga was sworn in as the “People’s President” at Uhuru Park in Nairobi.

NRM, a wing of NASA, was formed in October 2017 to act on the damages done by a repeat presidential election after Odinga had boycotted the re-run election claiming some electoral commission reforms he demanded did not take place.

However, Odinga said during the launching of NASA in 2017, that ‘’its resistance wing would embark on a vigorous pro-democracy campaign through economic boycotts and picketing and other legitimate forms of protests until a legitimate presidency is restored’’.

It will be recalled that Kenyatta’s victory was annulled in August 2017 by the Supreme Court over irregularities but he won a re-run and was sworn in for a second term in November 2017.

Meanwhile, the attorney-general had warned that Odinga could be charged with treason if the event went ahead adding that the offence can carry a death penalty.
