Buhari Approves Ayo Gbeleyi as Chairman FMBN

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Mr Ayodeji Gbeleyi as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).

Mr Femi Adesina, the President’s spokesman, confirmed this development in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

A Chartered Accountant and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Gbeleyi is a well-known financial expert who was once a Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State,” Adesina said.

Gbeleyi, who is also a player in the aviation sector, replaces Chief Adewale Adeeyo, who passed on recently.

Navy Sieze Cocaine Worth N10bn In Lagos

The Nigerian Navy (NN) has intercepted cocaine worth N10 billion and 261 bags of Cannabis Sativa worth over N100 million in Lagos

Speaking to newsmen on Thursday at NNS BEECROFT Parade Ground, Apapa, Lagos, the commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, Rear Admiral Bashir Mohammed, said that 261 bags of cannabis worth over N100 million in the local market were intercepted during the Yuletide.

He said about 413 bags of foreign rice and over 150 drums of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) being smuggled into the country during the Yuletide were also seized.

According to him, NNS ABA, NNS KANO and NNS OSUN played significant roles in the apprehension of the smugglers and the products being smuggled into the country. “I reassure Nigerians of the CNS commitment to sustaining her constitutional roles which include curbing drug trafficking and illegal bunkering activities as well as oil theft within Nigeria’s maritime domain”, Mohammed added.

Brigadier’s convoy defy traffic rules, hit Lagos deputy gov’s convoy

The convoy of a Brigadier reportedly jumped a red light and hit the convoy of the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 6.05pm at Adebayo Kuku Junction, by Alfred Rewane Road. The Deputy Governor was said to have swiftly restored peace at the scene.

An eyewitness, Madam Ejiro Clement, an eyewitness to the incident, said the Deputy Governor’s convoy was heading for Osborne from Marina when the incident occurred.

“I witnessed the incident while coming from Lekki Phase 1. Some traffic officials were doing their routine job at the junction when the Deputy Governor’s convoy stopped to obey the traffic light. “Surprisingly, the convoy of a Brigadier was seen driving recklessly and did not obey the traffic light. Funny enough, they blocked the Deputy Governor’s convoy, hit one of his sparrows and damaged it in the process.

Surprised at the Deputy Governor’s action, it was learned that the Army officer alighted from his car to caution his team.

Missing UNIJOS Student Found Dead Inside Hotel Room

 A 300-level student of the University of Jos (UniJOS), identified as Jennifer Anthony, has been killed and her body mutilated, with some parts missing.

Miss Anthony a 300 level Special Education and Rehabilitation Sciences student of UniJOS went missing on December 31, 2021, New Year’s Eve.

One Daniel Olugbenga Adediran had earlier appealed to the public for help in locating her whereabouts.All attempts to locate her whereabouts had proved abortive until her body was recovered in a hotel in Jos with both eyes gouged out, indicating she may have been killed for ritual purposes.

FirstNigeriaTv learnt that the victim was lured to a hotel on Zaria road in Jos, by a man suspected to be her boyfriend, where she was allegedly drugged before being killed. The boyfriend, after the act, left the hotel and removed virtually everything that might be used to trace him, including the lady’s phone and other valuables in her bag.

Renowned Islamic scholar, Dr Ahmad BUK dies in Kano

Dr. Ahmad Bamba, a renowned Kano based Islamic scholar has died on Friday. Malam Abdullahi Ahmad, one of his sons, disclosed this when he spoke with newsmen on Friday in Kano.

Abdullahi said that the scholar, popularly called Dr Ahmad BUK, died at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital on Friday, after a brief illness.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bamba was a native of Ghana who came to Nigeria after studying in Saudi Arabia to teach at the Bayero University, Kano (BUK).

He was one of the best scholars who specialised in the teachings and interpretations of the Hadith, the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon him (PBUH). Bamba gave lessons at the BUK mosque, before he moved to his own mosque called Darul Hadith in Kano.

Gunmen Storms Police Headquarters In Imo, Free Detainees

Gunmen on Thursday stormed a Divisional Police Headquarters in Dikenafai, Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State.

The gunmen attacked parts of the station with explosives and set free the detainees. The explosives reportedly destroyed the administrative office, the Divisional Police Officer’s office, and the reception desk.

Chairman of Ideato South LGA Interim Management Committee, Pastor Bede Ikeaka, who confirmed the development, expressed shock at the incident.

But Imo Police Command spokesman, Michael Abattam, a Chief Superintendent of Police, said he was yet to be briefed.

JEMB Debunks Rumors, Says Sales Of Form Is Yet To Commence

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has not commenced the sale of 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) application forms.

The board, in a statement by its Spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin, on Thursday in Abuja, dismissed speculation and misinformation in some quarters that the examination forms were now on sale.

Benjamin said that the attention of the board had been drawn to the activities of unwholesome elements misleading the general public on the purported commencement of the sale of the 2022 UTME and DE application documents.

The spokesperson further said that the public would be sufficiently informed of the commencement of the sale of E-Pins once approval had been granted by relevant authorities.

Bandits Free 28 Abducted Victims In Niger

Bandits have freed at least 28 people kidnapped from communities in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.

The victims were released on Wednesday after their families reportedly paid over N18 million ransom to the kidnappers. Each of the victim’s families, FirstNigeriaTv learnt, paid about N600,000.

According to reports, those released were conveyed in a commercial vehicle from the Zamfara and Kaduna borders and dropped at Doka village in Kaduna State by their captors from where they trekked several kilometres through the bush to the main road.

When contacted, the Niger State Police Commissioner, Monday Bala Kuyars, confirmed the victims’ release, saying they were released after having serious dialogue with their kidnappers and most probably because the heat from the military and police operation in the area was getting too hot for the kidnappers. He said he could not confirm if the abductees’ relations paid any ransom to the bandits to facilitate their release but added that he heard something like that took place.

JusticeforSylvester: Ijaw Youths Protest DPP’s Report, Demands Justice

Members of the Lagos State chapter of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) on Thursday staged a protest in front of Dowen college, in the Lekki area of the State, to express their grievance after the Lagos state government cleared five students and five staff of the school of any complicity in the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr.

Oromoni was allegedly beaten by his school colleagues and given a chemical substance to drink after he rejected demands to join a cult group. The five students and five staff of the school linked to his death were on Wednesday acquitted by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The DPP Director, Adetutu Oshinusi, had said the report issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and the Central Hospital, Warri, agreed that the causes of Oromoni’s death were septicaemia, lobar pneumonia with acute pyelonephritis, pyomyositis of the right ankle and acute bacterial pneumonia due to severe sepsis.

However, the IYC on Thursday vowed to occupy Dowen college if the Lagos state government opens Dowen college stating that ”justice has not been delivered” for the death of their son, Sylvester Oromoni. The protesting youths also called on Sylvester’s spirit to arise and ensure he gets justice.

Ladoja Addresses controversy around Olubadan stool

Chief Rasheed Ladoja, the Osi-Olubadan of Ibadan, snd also a former Governor of Oyo state, says High Chief Lekan Balogun, the Otun-Olubadan of Ibadanland, is the next in line to ascend the throne of Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ladoja was reacting to the controversy trailing who becomes the next Olubadan since the demise of Oba Saliu Adetunji on Jan. 2.

Ladoja said Balogun, as the most senior, is the next in line to the throne. Expressing his displeasure at the unwarranted tension the issue had generated, Ladoja said that he does not have power to make anyone the Olubadan of Ibadanland.

He explained that it was the High Chiefs who instituted two pending suits now generating the unwarranted tension, urging them to withdraw suits.
