King makers announce Lekan Balogun as Olubadan-elect
Members of the Olubadan-in-Council have endorsed Lekan Balogun as the next Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Osi Balogun of Ibadanland Tajudeen Ajibola announced this at a briefing by the kingmakers on Wednesday.
Ten of the 11 members of the Olubadan-in-Council endorsed Balogun’s nomination. All members of the Olubadan-in-Council were present at the meeting except former governor Rashidi Ladoja.
According to Ajibola, the kingmakers resolved that Balogun is next in line to ascend the throne of Olubadan according to tradition. He debunked rumour suggesting the Olubadan-elect was not fit health-wise.
South-West Govs Condemn Insubordinate Conduct Of CSP Oyewole
The South-West Governors’ Forum has condemned the ‘disrespect’ conduct of a Chief Superintendent of Police, Abimbola Oyewole in Magodo Phase II Estate.
CSP Oyewole had on Tuesday openly defied the order of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, which required he and his men to vacate the Magodo Estate area of the state.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the South-West Governors’ Forum and the Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, on Wednesday, the Forum described the attitude of the CSP as disrespectful while demanding an explanation from the IGP.
“We call on the President and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces to rein in the excesses of certain elements bent on acting in a manner capable of eroding the bond of trust existing between the people and the Federal Government. It is preposterous for political appointees to seek to undermine the very structure of service upon which their appointments rest.”
Lagos First Female Deputy Speaker, Adediran Adetoun Is Dead
Former Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Honourable Adetoun Adediran is dead.
A reliable source familiar with the development said Adediran died early today, Wednesday, 5 January, 2022 after a brief illness. She was the first elected female Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly when she served between 1999 and 2003.
Since then she has held many political offices including being the Women Leader of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).She was reported to have been sick for just two days before her demise this morning.
ABUAD herbal drug heals 19 COVID-19 patients
The efficacy of the herbal drug to combat Covid-19 developed by Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) has been put to test as 19 patients of the dreaded disease have recovered through the usage of the drug.
The founder of the University, Aare Afe Babalola who made the revelation said the number of those healed by the herbal drug is increasing by the day since its approval a few weeks ago by the National Agency for Food Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
He noted that the research department of the university over the years has been churning out meaningful new discoveries aimed at solving the socio-economic problems of the country.
Babalola who said this in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital on Tuesday during a ceremony commemorating the 12th anniversary of the establishment of ABUAD, added that he conceived the institution in 2010 to contribute to the nation’s education development in the area of research, teaching and community service.
2022 budget: Nigeria to spend N209.5m on Immigration uniforms
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) will spend over N209.5 million on uniforms and other clothing in the 2022 budget.
This is according to a breakdown of the expenditure figures of the NIS as contained in the 2022 budget recently signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The NIS will also spend over N76.5 million on the supply of foodstuffs and catering materials. The service will as well spend another N10.7 million on “Refreshments and Meals” while its security charges will gulp N71.65 million.
President Buhari had on December 31, 2021 signed into law the 2022 budget totalling N17 trillion. He had, however, queried the National Assembly for inserting 6,576 new projects worth about N37 billion into the budget.
Mozambique President, Wife Test Positive For COVID-19
The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, and his wife, Isaura Nyusi, have tested positive for COVID-19.
The President in a statement on Monday night, said he and his wife were asymptomatic.
The statement read, “My wife and I have been tested positive for COVID-19 in rapid tests we decided to do after several activities we have carried out over the last few days. “Even though we were asymptomatic, and waiting for definitive PCR test results, we immediately entered isolation in accordance with the health guidelines in force in the country.
“In the current context of the circulation of the Omicron variant of SARS-COV-2, highly contagious, we renew the call for strict observance of measures to prevent and combat the COVID-19 pandemic and urge all compatriots greater than 18 years of adhering to ongoing vaccination nationwide.”
Sanwo-Olu Visits Magodo, Appeals for Calm
Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has visited Magodo Phase II Estate over Tuesday’s protest by residents against alleged police siege.
Estate management had on Tuesday ordered a closure of the Estate’s gates in protest against the planned demolition of property in the estate.
Policemen numbering about 50 had recently accompanied suspected land grabbers and members of a family who had planned to demolish property in the estate to execute a Supreme Court judgement.
Addressing residents of the estate on Tuesday, Sanwo-Olu, while appealing for calm, said a meeting had been scheduled with the judgement creditors on Wednesday, adding that representatives of the association and the police would also be involved in the meeting.
Buhari Condoles Family of Former Naval Boss Ishaya Ibrahim
President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with the family of former Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral (Rtd) Ishaya Iko Ibrahim.
The former CNS had served as Flag Officer Commanding Naval Training Command and Naval Western Command before reaching the peak of his career.
The President, in a statement issued on Tuesday by Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, joined friends and associates, particularly in the military hierarchy, in mourning the passing of the naval officer, “whose meritorious service to the nation continues to inspire many officers, leaving a sustained legacy of loyalty, patriotism and gallantry”.
97 persons freed from bandits den in Zamfara
Police in Zamfara have secured the freedom of 97 persons from captivity in Shinkafi and Tsafe forest of the state. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ayuba El-Kana made the disclosure at a news conference in Gusau on Tuesday.
El-Kana said the rescue was the outcome of the extensive pressure mounted on bandits as a result of the ongoing military operation around the camp of a notorious bandit, known as Bello Turji that covered Shinkafi, Zurmi, and Birnin Magaji Local Government Areas.
Recall that on Jan. 3, Police Tactical Operatives deployed at Shinkafi axis, received an intelligence report that some kidnapped victims were seen stranded in the bush.
The police operatives in collaboration with genuine repentant bandits and vigilantes, swung into action and rescued 68 victims from the forest.
9 dead, 5 injured as bandits storms Kaduna
Nine persons were killed while five others sustained injures, following attacks by bandits in Igabi and Zaria Local Government Areas of Kaduna State.
Mr Samuel Aruwan, the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs who made the disclosure in a statement on Tuesday in Kaduna, said the attacks happened in Igabi and Zaria on Monday, Jan. 3.
He said that security operatives killed two of the bandits and recovered some firearms from them. Aruwan who was giving update on security situation in the state, commended efforts of security operatives in repelling the attackers.
The commissioner quoted Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state to have prayed for the repose of the souls of the citizens who lost their lives in the attacks, while condoling with their families.
