Lagos Govt orders Dowen College to close down indefinitely

he Lagos State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of Dowen College, Lekki, pending the outcome of an investigation into the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, a student of the school.

Commissioner for Education Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo announced the closure after a meeting with the School Management and Staff.

The father of the student said that his son was subjected to severe bullying, revealing that the boys who allegedly bullied Oromoni Jnr had been reported to the school management the previous term.

World Bank Tells Nigerian Govt To Put Consumption Tax On Alcohol, Cigarettes

The World Bank Group has asked the Federal Government to impose special taxes on alcohol, cigarettes and sugar-sweetened beverages to improve primary healthcare.

Director for Nigeria, World Bank Group, Chaudhuri mentioned this on Friday in Abuja at a special National Council on Health meeting organised by the Federal Ministry of Health.

He noted that taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and sugar-sweetened beverages would reduce the health risks associated with their consumption and expand fiscal space for universal health coverage post-COVID 19.

The country director stated that investing in stronger health systems for all would contribute to tackling rising poverty and inequality.

Omicron: Nigeria releases updated international travel protocols

Nigerian authorities have revised the country’s international travel protocol amid the emergence of a new variant of the COVID-19 virus – Omicron.

This was contained in a statement by Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha.

Mustapha explained that the review of the protocol was based on science, national experience, and global developments.

Terrorists Kill Two, Kidnap Over 50 in Kaduna

Suspected terrorists on Friday attacked the Ungwan Gimbiya community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing two persons while over 50 members of the community were abducted.

The terrorists stormed the community on Friday, selecting their targets, adding that over 13 members of families were visited by the terrorists.

The community is a few kilometers away from Kakau Daji where over 60 worshippers of Emmanuel Baptist Church were kidnapped on Sunday, October 31, 2021 during church service.

There is no official or police statement on the incident yet.

14 finalists emerge for 2021 Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting

The board of judges for the 2021 Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting has selected 14 finalists, five female reporters and nine male, for the 16th edition of the annual award whose public presentation will be held on Thursday, 9 December 2021, at NECA House, Lagos, from 4pm to 6pm.

The Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting recognises journalists who expose public or corporate corruption, human rights abuses and regulatory failures in Nigeria.

The award presentation event is held annually on December 9, the World Anti-Corruption Day and eve of the Human Rights Day, to acknowledge best practices in investigative journalism and call attention to its significance for attaining good governance, accountability, and social justice.

#EndSARS: LASU students agree to walk with Sanwo-Olu for peace

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has received an assurance from students of the Lagos State University (LASU) to join him on a peace walk in December.

They spoke on Thursday after the Governor commissioned the newly built students arcade LASU main campus in Ojo.

Sanwo-Olu had invited key campaigners to join him on a peace walk for some time in December, which some turned down.

However, the LASU student union president, Comrade Oladipupo Badmus announced that all students of the State- owned tertiary institution have resolved to walk with the Governor for peace and prosperity of the State.

2023: Wike Promise not to impose successor

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers on Thursday said he would not impose any governorship aspirant of his choice on the people of Rivers come 2023.

This was contained in a statement issued by Mr Kelvin Ebiri, his Special Assistant on Media, in Port Harcourt.

He assured that the leadership of the party would meet to decide who to support at the appropriate time.

Wike however said that he is obliged to ensure that Peoples Democratic Part (PDP) wins the 2023 governorship election in Rivers.

NCAA Okays commencement of commercial flights in Anambra Airport

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued authority to Anambra State Government to open the international cargo and passenger airport for commercial operations with effect from 2nd December, 2021.

This development was contained in a letter dated 1st December, 2021, addressed to Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, the aviation authority said that it has received security clearance from relevant security agencies for the opening.

With this clearance from NCAA, airlines already approved to operate at the Anambra airport include Air Peace, Ibom Air, United Nigeria Airlines and others are expected to start scheduling flights into and out of the airport immediately.

What will happen if Nigeria splits up – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says problems like poverty facing Nigeria will multiply if the country experiences breaks up.

He said this while receiving a delegation of the Muhammadu Buhari Osinbajo (MBO) Dynamic Support Group at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday.

The vice president in a statement issued by his spokesman Laolu Akande stressed the need for the country to remain united.

In his words, he said: “The unity of this country is important for all of the different ethnicities, religions, everybody. Whatever the group or ideology, unity is important for every one of us.”

Terrorists Kidnap 15 NGOs Staff, Motorists In Borno

Men suspected to be terrorists of the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP), have reportedly kidnapped atleast 15 people, including some officials of international Non-Governmental Organisations, in Borno State.

The terrorists mounted a checkpoint on the Damboa-Chibok Road, and abducted motorists at about 2 pm on Wednesday.

Reliable sources said the victims include some officials working with non-governmental organisations (NGOs), who were on their way to attend a workshop in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

While the Police command are yet to issue any statement, a reliable stakeholder in Gumsuri village, who confirmed the incident, said, the abandoned vehicles of the victims were still at the scene as at Thursday morning.
